In today’s resource for moms we will be hearing from Priya Lad from Brave Journey Doula Services. Priya is a Licensed Pediatric Nurse, a Certified Birth Doula and Childbirth Educator. In honor of April being cesarean awareness month, she will be sharing more about having a Gentle C-Section in Dallas as well as her own birth experience.
What is a doula?
Doulas are trained professionals that assist woman during and after childbirth to provide support for the family and parents. As a Birth Doula, Priya helps guide mothers to create a plan for labor so that it is a memorable journey by focusing on the emotional and physical support needed. Studies have shown that having a Birth Doula that fits a mothers needs will increase the chances of a positive birth experience. Woman that use a Birth Doula are less likely to utilize medical interventions, however, if needed at birth it is fully supported. As a Birth Doula, Priya’s role is to neither replace the partner, or medical support in place, but rather to help enhance the experience for the mother and family to create a blissful journey. Finding the right Birth Doula for you is like finding the right pair of shoes. When you find that right pair it just makes your journey that much better.

Most mom’s get pressured into a cesarean for many reasons such as being told your baby is too big, it fits the needs of the physician’s schedule, or because of an induction that results in medical interventions being required to get baby out safely. Today 1 in 4 women get opted to a C-Section, which is a really high number! There are many reasons for a cesarean delivery, however the effects of a C-Section live with a mother forever and recovery is something that takes a substantial amount of time.
When the procedure is done it is typically focused on the surgical part of getting the baby out safely, not necessarily about the mother and her partner. Gentle c-sections allow parents to feel more apart of the procedure and focus primarily on family centered care.
I had a cesarean with my son, nearly 2 years ago. Long story short, I had been induced because of low amniotic fluid and after 18 hours of labor I had only dilated 1 cm. Due to myself and my son not doing well with Pitocin we had to be taken in for a cesarean for both of our safety. I had never imagine having a cesarean, I had been one of those mothers that wanted a natural vaginal delivery. When the time came, we found out that we had no other option, but I felt that I didn’t even get a chance to think about how I wanted the procedure to be done. If I could go back in time, with what I know as a Doula, I would have requested a gentle c-section.
What is a gentle c-section?
It is considered to be more a birth rather than a surgery. When the child is born the sheet is brought down so the mother can see her baby while coming out. The procedure is still done in a sterile field, however once baby is born the mother would still get to experience everything that would happen in a vaginal delivery; such as immediate skin to skin, implementing breastfeeding, delayed cord clamping, etc. This allows the mother and her partner to feel more part of the delivery and for the baby to bond with the parents immediately rather than once mother has come out of recovery.
Birth can be unpredictable and may not go as planned, however having a cesarean like a gentle c-section allows for the mother to feel as if she were still part of the delivery. Speaking from experience, I feel that is so important and allows the mother to not feel that she has missed out on anything from her child being born. Birth is a difficult process and creating a more positive experience during your birthing experience can also lead to a more positive recovery.
Happy Cesarean Awareness Month to all the mother’s whom have endured a cesarean. You are BRAVE and so STRONG for enduring what you had to have your little one. Remember that scar is a sign of that strength, embrace it because you are amazing!
